Northallerton Archaeological Dig

A few weeks ago in town I’d heard about an archaeological dig happening over at the old Rutson Hospital in town. Some of what they’d dug up was a bit of pottery!

This ceramic dish was discovered on the site both it’s size and level of decoration are quite impressive. Due to the age of the piece it’s likely that its a lead based glaze but the colours were quite surprising. The decoration in the centre has quite a contemporary look about it considering its medieval.

Custom ring bowls

There are a few new made to order items popping into the shop at the moment! One of these is the custom ring bowl, they’re the most heavily customisable item in the shop with so many variations possible.

Each bowl can be customised with an impressed name, date, initials or a combination of the three of these. It really makes it unique to you and can help to commemorate a day special to you – a wedding, anniversary, engagement or even a significant birthday.

Getting your text on pots

There are lots of different ways of getting wording onto a pot be it for you or as a commemorative gift. I’ve been getting a variety of inquiries about the different techniques I use to get words onto pots. I try to choose methods that compliment the kinds of pieces I make, while there are easily more techniques out there these are just the ones I use.

Neutral glazes

One question I regularly get asked is what’s the difference between the neutral glazes on the colour chart; Brilliant White, Simply Clay and Vanilla Cream.

Each one has subtile differences but it’s enough that they’re distinct from one another. Working with neutral glazes can be quite difficult, they’re prone to easily picking up impurities from the clay or blemishes from other glaze colours they’re placed next to. Also their pale appearance during application means you have to be very careful about how much is applied!
