Looking back at a few custom pottery orders

March is a busy month with Mother’s Day and spring in the air, I’ve been working on a variety of custom orders and lots of yarn bowls!

This pair of yarn bowls were a design challenge, the symbol on the front is Beaivi the Sami symbol for the sun. I’ve been to Finland a few times and seen Sami symbols on jewellery, Sami are a nomadic tribal people who live in the arctic circle. In a way the Beaivi symbol is very similar to the Sun and Moon yarn bowl since they’re both celestial symbols.

Working on a more decorative style

Spring always seems a much quieter time in the studio with the busyness of Christmas over and done with. I’ve been spending a little more time experimenting with decorative techniques. Everything in the studio lately has had a re-organise as I’ve been wanting to add some additional workbench space, somehow it seems that there’s never enough!

A few custom items from Christmas

Now that we’re deep into the new year its safe to share a few custom items ordered over the festive season. It’s great to be able to work with customers so closely to create pieces to be given as gifts that hopefully inspire all year round.

Sometimes when I create new pieces for the shop they take a while to ‘catch on’ and pet bowls are certainly one of them. This Christmas I’m sure there have been a few pampered pets out there!

Preparing for winter

In the studio I’m busy looking ahead to the final quarter of the year, unfortunately pottery is a slow craft with bespoke items and dinner sets sometimes taking as long as 8 weeks to complete. Planning is key to organising orders through the busy festive season.

With this in mind I thought I’d put out the final delivery dates for Christmas 2013. These are of course subject to change and will probably do so as we head into November, in stock items and made to order pieces are handled differently so before ordering make sure you accurately read listing titles and descriptions.

A look in the studio

There’s always something going on in the studio and this past month has been an interesting one with such a wide range of requested items getting posted out from the studio.

It’s been ages since I’ve made any pet bowls but here’s one for Rosie the springer spaniel! I’ve previously only made these for cats but this one has a larger size with a more elevated height. Hopefully this will help stop Rosie getting her ears in her dinner!

A few custom orders in the studio

Every now and then I get custom order requests, its nice to work on more unusual pieces which I get to collaborate on with the person who’s buying it. I thought I’d take this opportunity to showcase a few of these.

The thing about handmade is that you can mix and match dinnerware and there’s just something fun about this set of pasta bowls and plates. Each one is glazed in a different colour and texture but somehow they all work well together! Sometimes when dealing with the textures of glazes I often get asked what the difference is, gloss glazes have a high shine and matt glazes have a satin finish due to the lower levels of sand or silica in the glaze. These properties are part of the glaze mixture itself and once made up it can’t really be changed.

Last orders for 2012

As we’re nearing the end of the year it’s time to call last orders for Christmas. I’m now unable to guarantee pre-Christmas delivery for pieces, you can still place ‘made to order’ item requests and I’ll do my best to complete them but keep in mind that with made to order items delivery dates can vary.
