Green tea and chocolate cake

I’ve been a fan of bakerella site for a while now but until recently all I’ve been able to do is admire the pretty pictures. Last weekend I bought some American style measuring cups from John Lewis.

I was really eager to try them out! So for my first project I decided to make the green tea and chocolate cake from bakerella.

Hopefully as I get a bit more experienced with using cups my technique will improve a little I did end up spilling some of the ingredients around the kitchen a little. What I was really impressed by was the speed at which I was able to put this cake together. Cups are quicker than scales.

Win a handthrown pottery mug!

If you follow me on Twitter you might know that last week I talked about having a giveaway on my blog. I decided to go with the little red mug as the giveaway prize.

This is actually the first mug I ever threw on the wheel, maybe I shouldn’t give it away but I have plenty other pieces to get sentimental about.

You can see the marks in the clay where I’ve drawn it up, I pulled the handle and attached it to the pot. It has a level piece at the top for you to rest your thumb upon. Also its dishwasher safe so don’t worry about putting it in with your regular dishes.

Etsy showcase – Lazygiraffe

It’s been a while since I last featured another seller on my blog so I’d like to introduce Lazygiraffe who I mentioned in my last post.

Based in Cambridge she produces elegant jewelery made from vintage beads, charms, silver, brass and gold. Since many of the beads featured in pieces are often small run vintage beads many of the pieces are unique and one of a kind.

I’ve often had problems with my hands turning green from jewelery but thankfully Lazy’s is nickel free which is great.

Often the pieces for sale have a modern vintage look, particularly the earrings. As well as a retro inspiration many of the earrings echo nature such as the rainfall necklace or cute dainty flowers.

Glazing ceramics basics

So those mugs I talked about the other day which were getting ready for their biscuit firing in the kiln. Well they’ve been fired and the next stage is glazing.

I’m going to pretend that you know literally nothing about ceramics when talking about glazes.

When a pot is biscuit fired in the kiln it means that it becomes heated to 1000 degrees. This removes all the water from the body of the pot making it very porous.

Happy Easter! – Simnel Muffins

This coming weekend is Easter. I was in a baking mood and looking for something Easter related to make, I’m not much of a fruit cake fan so simnel cake was pretty much out. However I came across a recipe on the BBC good food website for simnel muffins.

I followed the recipe pretty much to the letter until it came to the marzipan. Since I’d bought a whole pack of marzipan and it doesn’t often get used in our house I decided I’d go crazy and use the whole thing. Unfortunately it was a bit too much.

I think if I was to use the recipe again I’d replace the marzipan with chocolate just because I love chocolate and in a way its kinda Easter related isn’t it?
