Glazes

Recently I’ve been getting a lot of questions about custom orders, I always try whenever I can to accommodate those requests. Unfortunately glazes are one of those things that are difficult to reproduce especially from photos.

Glazes themselves are a variety of powders mixed together; the majority of a glaze is glass formed through heating silica or sand at a high temperature in the kiln. Joining this is a variety of fluxes to lower the temperature and to stablise the glaze and finally there is a colourant. Colourants are usually natural compounds powders created from minerals dug from the Earth itself.

Custom pottery work in progress

There’s a lot going on in the studio since I’ve been working towards the summer break and getting custom orders completed has been a priority. I’ve been working on a few unusual ones, experimenting with prototype pieces is also quite a lot of fun. Maybe you don’t get it quite right first time but that’s the joy of handmade.

Summer studio break

As the summer season draws to a close I’ll be spending a couple of weeks away from the studio. During this time I won’t be making new pieces but I will still be responding to emails and posting out sold in stock items whenever possible – I will be at the mercy of my family!

Recent work – a selection of custom orders

Summer always seems to bring custom orders as people prepare for birthdays or anniversaries. While I can’t always say ‘yes’ to all custom orders I always try to accommodate requests.

As a potter and a designer they stretch my skills and while I don’t always get it right first time these suggestions often hit on great new shapes. One of my favourites was this set of elephant pieces, the combination of the glaze colour and elephant makes me think of African Safari’s.
