Limited edition glazes

At the moment there are a few glazes on the colour chart I like to call ‘limited edition’. These are colours that once they’re gone they won’t be coming back into stock. This is either because their glaze recipes are difficult to reproduce, they’re difficult glazes to work with or aren’t requested enough to make them a regular feature of the chart.

A look in the studio

There’s always something going on in the studio and this past month has been an interesting one with such a wide range of requested items getting posted out from the studio.

It’s been ages since I’ve made any pet bowls but here’s one for Rosie the springer spaniel! I’ve previously only made these for cats but this one has a larger size with a more elevated height. Hopefully this will help stop Rosie getting her ears in her dinner!

A few custom orders in the studio

Every now and then I get custom order requests, its nice to work on more unusual pieces which I get to collaborate on with the person who’s buying it. I thought I’d take this opportunity to showcase a few of these.

The thing about handmade is that you can mix and match dinnerware and there’s just something fun about this set of pasta bowls and plates. Each one is glazed in a different colour and texture but somehow they all work well together! Sometimes when dealing with the textures of glazes I often get asked what the difference is, gloss glazes have a high shine and matt glazes have a satin finish due to the lower levels of sand or silica in the glaze. These properties are part of the glaze mixture itself and once made up it can’t really be changed.

Custom orders from the studio

Sometimes pottery leaves the studio as a custom order – something that’s just a little bit different from the kinds of work I normally make. It offers up a new way of working with unexpected results. While I’m not always able to accommodate every request being flexible can create pieces that I would never have thought of on my own.

I’ve chosen a few favorites to showcase from the pieces I’ve created between January and the end of March. The first is this unusually coloured yarn bowl with a Midnight blue inside and Vanilla cream outside. These two glaze colours and differing textures work so well together and the ‘wool’ wording really stands out! If you’d like a yarn bowl glazed in an unusual colour like this you can in the notes to seller on either Etsy or Folksy make a special request.

Glazes

Recently I’ve been getting a lot of questions about custom orders, I always try whenever I can to accommodate those requests. Unfortunately glazes are one of those things that are difficult to reproduce especially from photos.

Glazes themselves are a variety of powders mixed together; the majority of a glaze is glass formed through heating silica or sand at a high temperature in the kiln. Joining this is a variety of fluxes to lower the temperature and to stablise the glaze and finally there is a colourant. Colourants are usually natural compounds powders created from minerals dug from the Earth itself.
