While I was at the Chocolate festival in York I dropped by Gillies Fabrics to indulge in some fabric shopping! My Mum had recommended this shop to me but struggled to find it again, sometimes York can be disorientating with it’s twisty narrow alleys.
Gillies is located on 2 Peter Lane which is sandwiched between the two main shopping streets in York city centre. It’s quite an overwhelming shop from bolt upon bolt of fabric to ribbons and trimmings galore. Theres even boxes full of original uncut vintage sewing patterns, its amazing just how many of them are still in fashion!
I was mainly after cotton jersey or stretch fabric which is more difficult to find in shops around in my local area. The selection of fabrics in Gillies is excellent, a lot of the printed cottons stocked are very different from that found in other stores such as John Lewis.
You’ll also find heavy weight fabric stocked here such as lovely cotton denim, coloured boiled wool and woven woollens. In the end I came away with this soft stretch fabric and a lovely printed cotton. Since I love both birds and purple it was hard to say no to just under a meter of this, hopefully it’ll become something pretty soon!
